The methodological assessment report on the Impact and Dependence of Business on Biodiversity and Nature's Contributions to People cover

Also known as the Business and Biodiversity Assessment, this first-of-its-kind report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) can help you to better understand the relationships between business and biodiversity and support efforts to achieve the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity and the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The result of three years of work by 79 experts from 35 countries, the report draws on over 5,000 sources of information in its assessment of the ways businesses depend on - as well as impact - nature, and the risks those relationships create for both businesses and society.

The report finds that the growth of the global economy has been at the cost of immense biodiversity loss, which now poses a critical and pervasive systemic risk to the economy, financial stability, and human wellbeing. It also finds that businesses are central to halting and reversing biodiversity loss, but that many lack information to address their impacts and dependencies, as well as the risks and opportunities relating to biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people. To address this, the report explains the relationship between businesses and biodiversity; options for action by businesses, including financial institutions, financial actors, governments, and other actors; and key methods, metrics, and knowledge for measuring businesses impacts and dependencies on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people. The report highlights more than 100 specific actions that can be taken by businesses, governments, financial actors, and civil society to help halt and reverse biodiversity loss.
